My house burnt down

dondepresso:

So, no joke: My Portland house burnt down on Saturday morning (photo). I was staying at a friend’s house that night, so I didn’t get hurt, but all my belongings were destroyed, including the computer and tablet I was using to make Don Depresso comics (fortunately, there are still 17 left in the Tumblr queue, but after that I don’t know when I’ll be able to resume making comics).

I hate asking for shit like this, but if any of you readers feel like donating to help me replace my stuff and, y’know, rebuild my life, you can PayPal money to toiletresin@gmail.com. Even small amounts will help.

Thanks for reading,
Ruji

Last Day!

gailsimone:

I know I’ve talked about this several times, but today is the LAST DAY to pledge to get a physical copy of the LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS kickstarter.

We’re very excited by this, it’s been a huge success, and I think it bodes well for other creators to try doing their own dream projects with support directly from the readers. It’s exciting to be part of that, and THANK YOU ALL AGAIN.

Because of the support, we’ve added a LOT to the book, lots more pages, lots of bonus content, and it’s a gorgeous hardback edition, free shipping in the US, starting at fifteen bucks.

Just can’t thank everyone enough!

Graphic Novel Duo, Brothers of the Silence, Wants to Have You Killed!

blank-thegraphicnovel:

OFFICIAL CONTEST begins September 7, 2012!

Want to be drawn into a graphic novel?

Here’s your chance. Brothers of the Silence, graphic novelists Ian LeWinter and Implovious, want to draw you into Blank — the first graphic novel to release in real-time on Facebook and Twitter.

Just go to the Brothers’ website anytime from September 7th through 31st, 2012 at http://www.blank-thegraphicnovel.com/ for details and you could be among the first people to die from the extinction-level virus their villain unleashes on the world. It’s free to enter and ten winners will be chosen, who will ultimately be drawn into the first of seven graphic novels that make up the Blank franchise.

According to the Brothers, the plot is epic. “Our plot is bigger than most graphic novels,” says LeWinter. “So we needed technology to get traction with our audience. Blank has a lot of moving parts, with an event density greater than most graphic novel or comic book plots: confront monster, kill monster.”

“Competing cults worshipping the dodekatheon [Greek mythological gods] vie to control events that bring about the apocalypse,” adds Implovious. “One cult attempts to destroy the world as predicted by an ancient Greek codex; the other attempts to protect it, expectantly waiting for the Blank — the prophetic champion who will save humankind from destruction. Unfortunately for everyone, the Blank is already dead.”

LeWinter says, “The story’s villain develops and spreads an extinction-level pandemic. The world’s top minds mobilize to fight it, but to no avail. The virus is far too resourceful. Everyone dies.”

Everyone?

“Everyone,” he affirms. “Including ten readers that we’ll draw into the Spread of the Dead, lying on the ground in a crowd of corpses. If we can’t have fun with this stuff, then we need to ask ourselves why we got into this game in the first place.”

On August 1, 2012, the Brothers launched their project on Kickstarter, asking for $95,000, the largest target of any graphic novel on Kickstarter to date. The funds are necessary, they believe, not only to publish the first book in print form for their entire fanbase, but also to produce sequentially-numbered collector editions, and evolve the series toward movies and games.

“Right now, we have readers in 118 countries,” Implovious says, “with a fanbase of over 106,000 people — bigger than the city of Savannah. Our fans have been really great to us, supporting us on this entire journey. We really wanted to give something back. We’re also hoping this contest will help get the word out that there’s a new kid in town.”

“We got tired of the same old story,” says LeWinter, “and wanted to give our audience something deeper than guys in tights with lots of money for toys. So we used a fully-annotated, 300-line Greek lyric codex, that springboards into a Mediterranean cult, complete with terrorist-level evangelists and ritualistic sacraments. It’s not your run-of-the-mill graphic novel. Sure, we give it monsters, a superhero protagonist and lots of action. But those aren’t seen at the expense of the larger story.”

When asked about his dead protagonist, LeWinter smiles and says, “Don’t worry. He may have some tricks up his sleeve.”

This is cool for the creative sorts out there!

neaughea:

Character ContestIf you like to write or game, this is kind of cool! In this contest you just have a create a character in the universe of the comic. You don’t have to draw a picture if you aren’t the artful sort, it’s like a basic character back story for an rpg.

If you enter you get a free download from the publisher, and a chance to win a signed graphic novel. These guys publish @richard A Knaak, @Richelle Mead and others.

Okay, so my cousin is the most hipster bitch ever. She is planning to take me to a book store that specializes in graphic novels.

I want something new to read. And I love graphic novels. They’re like picture books for grownups and extra long comic books for hipsters who like to read.

ANYWAY… I really want a new graphic novel series to read. My Scott Pilgrim series is collecting dust now because I haven’t read it in so long. I have nothing else now.

Does anyone have any good graphic novels? Even manga is okay. Manga is beautiful. Anime is probably one of the most beautiful styles of art. I really just want something kickass, something with a neat drawing style, and especially a romance kind of story. I love a good romance story.

Meet my demands. Graphic Novel. Doesn’t have to be manga. Romance.

There are graphic novels based on Jane Austen novels (Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and Emma) published by Marvel.

For romance/fantasy manga, you’re not going to go wrong with anything by Yu Watase (Fushigi Yugi, Imadoki!, and Alice 19th).

Depending on how you feel about Christianity, you could try Blankets by Craig Thompson, which is the autobiographic story of the author’s struggles with his religion and first love.  I’ve not read it myself, but it’s gotten some pretty stellar reviews.
