I got my computer back, so I’ll now be able to go through more rec requests soon.
I’m also thinking of doing a series of posts dedicated to where to start reading differnt characters/themes. I’m thinking I’ll start with Green Arrow in preperation of the new show Arrow coming up in October. So keep an eye out for those.
Any other themes/characters you’d like to see?
This is just a quick post to say that I won’t be on as frequently as I have been. I’ve got some real life things to take care of in the next couple of days and a slightly less reliable computer.
What that means for you:
It simply means that I won’t be hunting down people to answer questions for unsolicited and that my “likes” page won’t continue to grow exponentially.
Please still send in your questions if you have them, and I will get to them as soon as possible.
If you know of any current giveaways or contests that are not in the tag, please leave a link to them in my submit box.
If you have any questions, please direct them to my ask box.
Are any of you interested in hearing when other Tumblr sites have comic book give aways?
Once again August 28th has been declared Read Comics in Public Day and once again I am going to run an concurrent event via a Tumblr blog. I started this event two years ago with the idea of ”what if we could show the world the diversity and a snapshot of the breadth of female comic readers. How would that look?” As it turns out pretty amazing. I honestly didn’t know if I would get one photo and I got many wonderful pictures from around the world.
I did it again last year and despite most of the Eastern part of the country being lashed by a huge hurricane I still got lots of pictures.
And this year I’m doing it again. But there are some differences. This year the day is in the middle of the week so I’m expanding the event to include the two days after. But if you can take your photo on the 28th, do it! Read on the bus, in the park, in your office, anywhere that isn’t your home. And if you don’t identify as a woman send in pictures of your girl friends, sisters, daughters, moms!
I don’t care what comic you read but if you are so inclined to read a superhero comic from Marvel or DC, that would be great. And if you want to post a sticky telling how much you spend on comics per month, all the better.
This year’s header for the event was designed by two of the youngest comics fans I know the wonderful Cate and Grace of “5 Minute Marvels”. I think it’s terrific!
So let’s do this ladies; Let’s show ‘em. Help me spread the word and get as many women to participate possible in:
Welcome to Men Reading Women in Comics. This Tumblr aims to debunk the myth that men aren’t interested in reading strong, diverse and interesting women in comics - either as characters or creators. If you’re one of those rare guys who actively *doesn’t* like reading women in comics, perhaps you should consider making your voice heard elsewhere - not every space is for you!
Want to get involved? Here’s how.
To celebrate Reading Comics in Public Day, and inspired by the continued awesome that is Women Reading Comics in Public, we would like to invite any male-identified comic readers interested in women in comics to contribute to raising the visibility of men who read women in comics on Tuesday August 28th.
There are a number of ways you can take part…
1. Take a snapshot of yourself with your favourite women in comics. This might be a female-led title, a title featuring particularly strong or diverse representations of women in comics, or a comic written, pencilled, inked, or coloured by a woman. Tell us who you are, and what you’re reading.
2. Tweet your favourite women in comics. Tell us who you love and why you love them, and don’t forget the hashtag #MRWIC
3. Video blog a review of your favourite women in comics. Show us your collection, choose your favourite titles, tell us which benched characters you want to see more of, give some love to the titles and creators who need it.
Content can be submitted here on Tumblr, added to our Flickr Group, or tweeted with the hashtag. We’ll also be putting together a Storify to capture the best of the day and embedding it here for all to see.
Can’t make it on August 28th? Don’t worry – we’re not going anywhere. We will be accepting content on an ongoing basis so that when any ridiculous marketing hack tells you men won’t buy women in comics, you can send them here.
Oh, and we get by with a little help from our friends. So if you’re not male-identified but still want to contribute, why not grab a snapshot of you and one of those male friends reading women in comics and send it in.
Want to know more? Read why we’re doing it.
I’ve got quite a few things to do this evening, from making dinner, washing the rest of last week’s dishes, and hitting the gym for another round of my optimistically cosplay related workout routine of trying to get some definition in my arms before I dress up as a genderswapped version of Bane (which reminds me, I didn’t do my twenty-five pushups yesterday). But tomorrow… Tomorrow I have a very specific task to complete: read a comic book in public. And you should seriously consider putting it on your to-do list as well, and maybe even sending us some pictures. Here’s why!
Are any of you interested in hearing when other Tumblr sites have comic book give aways?
An embarrassingly short time, really. I just started reading last summer. I’d been a comics nerd all my life (watching superhero cartoons was a formative childhood experience), but I realized I hadn’t ever read any. So I decide to rectify it.
This blog sprung out of the multiple Deadpool reading recs I’d been making on my personal blog. I figured that it’d be a good way to encourage myself to continue learning about comics while helping other people in the process.
I’ll clean out my “Likes” page sometime tomorrow. I promise.
